Objectives & Goals

Objectives

To continue to build relationships and strategic partnerships with local organizations in the Transkei area of South Africa which are also focused on community development initiatives.

To become fully operational in one of the coastal villages of Transkei, where Surfcare will use surfing as a medium for a variety of development projects, including HIV/AIDS education, orphan care,  and a water filtration project.

Goals

• To begin a surf program for local children that will be used as a platform for HIV/AIDS education

• To implement a project to support orphans and vulnerable children in this region

• To implement a water filtration project called Cover the ‘Kei in an effort to effectively provide clean drinking water to households who have no access to it. Surfcare is currently looking into working with Waves for Water on this initiative (wavesforwater.org)

Recent Accomplishments

During a site visit in 2011, Surfcare developed relationships with:

Aleph Surfing Foundation (www.alephsurf.org)- a South African nonprofit based in Jeffrey’s Bay that is using surfing to enter the lives of youth in need of mentorship and positive role models. Surfcare is in conversation with Aleph regarding a partnership to implement a project in the village of Mdumbi in Transkei.

Sustainable Coffee Bay (sustainablecoffeebay.wordpress.com)-a local, community-based organization based in Coffee Bay that is has developed a holistic approach to development in the area, including a surf club, a permaculture project and a Montessori pre-school.
