HiTW Overview
The Hole in the Wall Bicycles’ primary mission as stated is to provide bicycles for those who cannot afford them. However, an important secondary mission is The Hole in the Wall’s commitment to our environment. The broken bicycles will be completely recycled either by reusing the parts that are still viable as well as recycling the left over scrap parts that cannot be salvaged.
Being blind has given me a strong desire to give back to the community that has provided me with so many support services. The Hole in the Wall Bicycles will become part of the support network of services in Colorado Springs. I will work with local charitable organizations such as Care and Share and Candle Lighters to provide them with the repaired bikes for distribution. In the short term, I (Nathan Hammond) will be the only repairman working on the bikes. However, my intention is to provide a venue for the training of others who are interested in learning the trade.
The Hole in the Wall Bicycles is also about making dreams come true for all ages. For someone who needs transportation to get to work, obtaining a bicycle can empower them and give them independence and self-sufficiency. For parents who want to give their child their first bike but whose funds go to food and shelter can now provide this special gift. And for those children dreaming of soaring down the street with their friends, feeling the breeze on their faces, will be able to realize the happiness of one's first very own bicycle.
